A very plant-based christmas

One of many video’s I directed with the “Lord of Mushrooms” Derek Sarno (Wiked Kitchen), my wonderful team at Cedar and cinematographer Matthew Stuart Smith. This ambassador for plant-based living always gave us more amazing stories and philosophy than we could fit into a video, and of course he wouldn’t allow a shoot to go by without a chilled break chatting around his dining table. “Cause no suffering” is a core value Derek embodies in his approach to food industries: truly an innovative and positive force..

Idents: animation,

music and sound design

I love working in mograph - collaborate with the client on a storyboard and style, chuck on the tunes and make things move.. I created the music and sound design for Legends of Gaming, Pretty Up Front, ZenB TVC’s, and Wellcome Trust, bringing a few of my favorite things together in edit.

archives - bmw mini

A lovely location from which to present essential information on financial services… and of course a few of those ‘pointing-at-screen’ moments that we all love and cherish.

I have a couple of decades in video production but really honed an energetic “core style” during my time at the BBC and with Cedar where I was regularly creating video and animation for edu-docs (e.g. Under “Food Focussed Fun”), case studies, educational entertainment (e.g. BBC Access All Areas).

I am also a passionate about mentoring in photography, video and music production and am very involved in Bristol’s beautiful arts culture.

There’s plenty more to chat about: Fun times Tx Editing, Camera and Photography at Global Radio’s Jingle Bell and Summertime Ball, my first suite of documentaries on how the 2012 Olympic Games helped the poorest communities in Westminster, years of photography for editorial, commercial portraits and a suite of artists models, and many recent tales of working at Golley Slater creating suites of case studies on Net Zero, plenty of cute animations and infographics, treatments and production for charities and some quick-turnaround TVC’s for education and Transport for Wales.

Skills:
Director/ Pre production.
Shoot, edit, motion graphics and sound.
Music composition, music edits and sound design.
Delivery to social platforms and TVC (Clearcast spec. For full AS11 deliveries I outsource to my inexpensive contacts for metadata QC and transcode).

I guess I should mention software:
Adobe PP, PS, AI, AE.
Resolve Studio (Learning is in progress and I love it so far).
Logic Pro
And I'll sneak UGC audio through Adobe Podcast Enhance if the project allows.

Hardware:
Love an FX3 or FX6/9, also love working with Pyxis and Blackmagic Raw.

And thoughts on ethical use of AI:
Generative can be useful but it won’t shoot your wedding - Generative AI can help in making assets as part of a larger composition, but it’s essential to be aware of the environmental cost against the values and the ethics of each project (e.g. for Net Zero projects using resource intensive gen AI would currently be… silly).

Even amongst the heavy corporate push to “use AI to save money and time” I believe we all have a responsibility to ensure we keep on top of AI tech but also take time to research which AI’s are most economical and environmentally conscious and which are naughty. On that, I have written to most popular gen AI companies requesting documentation on their environmental policies and interestingly only 2 of 8 got back to me and with some pretty vague answers about “up to date processors” recycling in the office, and carpooling to work. B+ for writing back.

AI can, however be used very effectively to save time in preproduction and in the edit:
LTX Studio is excellent at quickly building a storyboard for a treatment. Elevenlabs generates some very useful sound effects and temp voiceovers. Audiio’s HansAI saves hours in music searches (we love the team at Audiio!). And although near the top of list for environmental issues, MS Copilot has saved a charity project around 1.5 days, helping me cut down 5 hours of IV within a couple of hours: and that’s worth a high five for that charity.

AI and Privacy
We love Blackmagic for their privacy. Unlike all other AI, no client data is uploaded or processed without opt-in, Even their cloud-based project sharing keeps client data in the EU/UK - essential for compliance with GDPR and IT Cyberessentials certification.
Resolve studio 20 uses locally-processed ML/AI which is incredible for client privacy.

DBS Checked
There’s an enhanced DBS certification around these parts, with my name on it.
